Yokomitsu Riichi (1898-1947) è uno degli autori giapponesi più importanti della sua epoca. Ottenne inizialmente fama con uno stile influenzato dalle avanguardie letterarie europee del periodo. Nella seconda metà degli anni ’20 fondò lui stesso, con alcuni colleghi, tra cui l’amico Kawabata Yasunari (premio Nobel per la letteratura nel 1968), un gruppo di sperimentazione letteraria noto come Shinkankakuha (Neopercezionisti). Tra le sue opere più note di quegli anni, due racconti, ambedue tradotti in italiano: Nichirin (L’astro solare) e Haru wa basha ni notte (La primavera arriva su una carrozza). Il romanzo Shanghai ha rappresentato uno dei suoi tentativi più noti di mettere in pratica lo stile sperimentale da lui teorizzato, pur mantenendolo accessibile al pubblico. Shanghai è stato tradotto in lingua inglese e pubblicato negli Stati Uniti nel 2001.
